How Much Does a DNA Test Cost?
Finding how much does a DNA test cost is sometimes a confusing question. The simplest place to narrow down the variables is to determine the exact expectations and needs of the results once they are known.
The lowest cost DNA test is one in which the sample is taken from the person or family member desiring the test be conducted. This is with a swab that extracts the cells from the inner cheek. This sample is then sent by mail to the lab and the DNA results are determined. This is not to be used for legal purposes because there is no chain of evidence documentation. But the parents of a child can be determined. The Genetic Testing laboratory, Inc. offers this test for just $95. If both parents are to be tested, then an additional $15 should be added.
If the results are needed for a legal proceeding, then the chain of custody of the sample and its rules must be adhered to. This increases the cost, but the actual testing is the same. The DDC or DNA Diagnostic Center can handle this type of request. They can supply the courts with acceptable DNA results that will pass all the legal requirements for a fee of $495.
From the National Geographic Society comes the Genographic Project. To be a part of this project, a cost of $99.95 is charged. These tests will be conducted on either the mtDNA or the y-DNA of the sample. The results that will be provided will show where your ancestors migrated from in the past. The particular branch of the human family tree will also be determined. This is not a percentage breakdown of your genetic makeup but where your ancestors came from tens of thousands of years ago.
How much does a DNA test cost varies depending on what you wish to know or what you have to prove.
